A major senior living community is beginning to take shape along Boynton Beach Blvd just west of Florida’s Turnpike. Ava Lakes by Erickson Senior Living will replace the former nursery property at 8344 Boynton Beach Blvd. It’s a 93.5-acre site now being cleared. The current plans call for roughly 738 independent-living units, plus assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing residences, with long-range plans approaching 900 total residences. A sales center is also expected to open in Boynton Beach this year.

For local drivers, the bigger question may be traffic. County analysis found the project could significantly increase peak-hour volume on Boynton Beach Blvd between Lyons Road and the Turnpike, an area already known for heavy congestion. Roadway improvements will be required before the first residents move in, but Ava Lakes will add hundreds of residents, employees, visitors, and service vehicles. No completion date has been announced, but the project is now becoming more visible.

Big Changes Are Coming To The Former Cypress Creek Golf Course

Something is finally happening at the former Cypress Creek Golf Course in western Boynton. Residents driving along South Military Trail may have noticed earthwork, heavy equipment and the former pond being filled on the 122-acre property at 9400 South Military Trail. The site has been sitting vacant since 2018, but that quiet stretch is starting to look very different. Soil testing and remediation are still underway, and safety reports must be cleared before construction begins on a planned 152-home community.

And there’s more coming than houses. County approvals also call for a dog park near Military Trail, with hopes it could eventually be open to the public. A separate 2.45-acre civic site could bring up to 27,500 square feet of government or public-service space, although no specific facility has been announced. For nearby residents, the changes are small for now—but after years of waiting, this long-dormant property is finally showing signs of life.

Downtown Boynton Is Getting a New Sunday Attraction

The Good Day Market is returning to Boynton Beach this September with a new downtown location and a bigger lineup. After its first season at Boynton Beach Mall, the market will reopen Sunday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 129 E. Ocean Avenue, next to the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and across from Centennial Park & Amphitheater.

Organizers plan to feature more than 50 local vendors offering art, vintage finds, plants, home goods, specialty foods and drinks, along with food trucks. The new season will also bring themed market days, yoga, mat Pilates, workshops and other community activities. With a more central location and expanded programming, The Good Day Market is aiming to become an even bigger downtown draw this fall.

If driving through I-95 and Boynton Beach Boulevard already feels like a construction obstacle course, brace yourself: the $64 million interchange project is now creating some of its biggest traffic headaches. The Florida Department of Transportation is widening the Boynton Beach Boulevard bridge over I-95, adding turn lanes to the highway ramps and creating a third westbound through lane to improve traffic flow. But getting there will take time. The work is happening alongside the Gateway Project, which we covered last month.

Portions of I-95 can lose up to three lanes overnight, entrance and exit ramps may close between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., and eastbound Boynton Beach Boulevard has been reduced from three lanes to two between NW 8th Street and east of Industrial Avenue. That traffic pattern is expected to remain through late 2026. For Boynton residents, the short-term reality means slower trips and occasional detours, especially at night. The payoff should be a safer, higher-capacity interchange, but the entire project is not expected to be finished until early 2029.

Florida Will Soon Have a New Governor - And the Road Starts Here

Tomorrow is Election Day, and Boynton voters will help shape a political landscape that is already beginning to change. Polls are open Tuesday, August 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and early voting has ended, so anyone who has not voted yet must go to their assigned Election Day polling place. This election also comes as Florida heads toward a major transition: Gov. Ron DeSantis cannot run for a third consecutive term after winning back-to-back elections in 2018 and 2022, making the race to succeed him one of the biggest stories on the horizon.

Florida is a closed-primary state, so your registered party generally determines which partisan races appear on your ballot. Boynton residents should check their polling location before leaving home and bring an acceptable photo and signature ID. Vote-by-mail ballots must reach the Supervisor of Elections Main Office by 7 p.m. today (August 18). Simply mailing it tomorrow is not enough.

Boynton Police Training Center Draws Backlash

A proposed police training center near Golfview Harbour has been put on hold after neighbors raised concerns about noise, trees and property values. Boynton Beach planned the facility on roughly 7.75 acres near the subdivision, including a 12-lane, 50-yard shooting range, defensive-tactics space and realistic training areas. City staff said the center would help meet growing police training needs. After residents organized against the location, District 1 Commissioner Angela Cruz announced the project would be paused. About $60,000 of a roughly $434,000 architectural planning contract had reportedly already been spent. Residents say the issue is not police training itself, but whether regular firearms training belongs beside an established neighborhood.

Boynton changed dramatically in the 1920s, gaining electricity, a water treatment plant and some of the landmarks that still define the city today. The original Boynton Beach Hotel was demolished during this era, while famed architect Addison Mizner designed the Boynton Woman’s Club in 1925. More than a century later, the building still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A long-awaited road project on Lyons Road is moving closer to construction, and it could affect thousands of West Boynton drivers. Palm Beach County is now accepting bids for improvements along Lyons Road from just north of the LWDD L-30 Canal to Boynton Beach Boulevard. The county’s engineer estimates the project will cost about $16.5 million, with bids due August 25. The work comes as Lyons Road continues to transform from a once-rural corridor into one of the busiest north-south routes in western Boynton.

Surrounded by new communities, businesses, and other types of development, Lyons Road has brought heavier traffic and more pressure to key intersections. For Boynton residents, this project matters because Lyons Road is a major daily route for commuters, shoppers, and families traveling between Boynton Beach Boulevard, Atlantic Avenue, and nearby neighborhoods. Construction could mean temporary delays, but the long-term goal is to improve traffic flow and safety in an area that keeps getting busier. As Boynton continues to evolve, its infrastructure will need to keep up to accommodate the growing population.

A New Plan Could Change The Look And Feel Of Boynton Beach

Boynton Beach is taking a closer look at how public art should shape the city’s appearance in the years ahead. A new Public Art Master Plan is being developed to guide future murals, sculptures and other artwork in public spaces while building on pieces already found around the city. The plan follows months of public workshops and community input involving residents, businesses, artists and city staff. The Art Advisory Board was scheduled to make its final recommendation to the City Commission on August 12.

The proposal is expected to receive its first City Commission reading on September 1 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. For residents, the plan could influence much more than individual artwork. It offers Boynton a long-term blueprint for making public spaces more distinctive, attractive and reflective of the community’s identity, while helping create a more recognizable look and feel as new development continues and older areas of the city are improved.

🤔 Did You Know?

One of Boynton’s eeriest stories involves the Stone Lodge, a roadside restaurant opened along US 1 in 1924. Owner Austin Stone was accidentally electrocuted in 1932, and seven years later his wife, Luisa, died from a rattlesnake bite. In 1940, the restaurant’s managers were found dead in a car outside in what was ruled a double suicide. Four deaths in eight years gave the long-gone Stone Lodge a haunting place in Boynton history.

A redevelopment near unincorporated Boynton Beach is moving forward, transforming the former The Falls Country Club into an 800-home community. GL Homes plans 500 single-family homes and 300 apartments in four-story buildings on the 168-acre property at 6455 S. Jog Road. Twenty-seven apartments will be designated workforce housing. GL Homes purchased the property for $4.56 million in 2014 but was required to preserve the golf course for 10 years. After it closed in 2025, the redevelopment received approval on February 26th, 2026.

Plans include a clubhouse, pickleball and tennis courts, recreation areas, 35 acres of lakes, and 67 acres of open space. However, traffic remains the biggest concern for nearby residents. Once the development is completed it can easily add an additional 1,000 vehicles to an already overpopulated area. Hypoluxo, Jog, and Hagen Ranch roads will carry most of the vehicles. County consultants say improvements and adjusted signals will keep congestion manageable, but neighbors fear longer backups, cut-through traffic, and slower emergency response times. The first residents could arrive in 2027 or 2028, with the community being completed between 2030 and 2032.

The Truth Behind Boynton’s Latest Restaurant Violations

The next time you choose a place to eat, the menu may not be the only thing worth checking. During July, state inspectors found multiple high-priority food-safety violations at several local Boynton establishments, ranging from a breakfast café and pizza restaurant to a full-service restaurant and golf-club kitchen. Some recorded five or more high-priority violations, while two operations each received seven. Such violations can directly contribute to foodborne illness or injury. They may involve unsafe food temperatures, contaminated surfaces, improper storage or poor employee hygiene.

However, none of the Boynton businesses reviewed was temporarily closed, and some problems may have been corrected immediately. Still, remaining open does not mean an inspection was spotless. Florida reserves emergency closures for conditions posing an immediate public-health threat. For local diners, the lesson is simple: pay attention, check inspection reports and don’t ignore warning signs. Boynton Residents May Soon Pay New Utility Rates

Boynton Beach residents could soon see changes to their water and wastewater bills - and the city wants customers to understand why. Utility officials are holding town hall meetings to explain a proposed rate adjustment, answer questions and outline investments needed to keep the system safe and reliable. Boynton Beach Utilities serves approximately 112,000 customers across the city and surrounding communities. The next meeting will take place Wednesday, August 19th at 6:00 pm at the Arts & Cultural Center, located at 125 E. Ocean Avenue. Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend, learn how the additional revenue would be used and speak up before future utility rates are officially finalized.

Boynton Beach’s city government has come a long way since 1920. Early town business was conducted in humble locations such as the Boynton Lumber Company before permanent municipal offices were established downtown. Government operations eventually centered along Ocean Avenue, evolving as the city grew. The current City Hall and Library opened in July 2020 as part of a larger civic campus that continues to transform today.

A major new housing option for older adults is nearing completion in western Boynton Beach. Boynton Tropical, a three-story active-adult rental community along Hagen Ranch Road, will bring 210 apartments for residents age 55 and older. The project is rising on nearly nine acres and is now moving toward final inspections after substantial exterior and interior work. The community will offer one- and two-bedroom residences, along with roughly 15,000 square feet of amenities.

Plans include a resort-style pool, fitness and yoga areas, game and craft rooms, outdoor lounges, a salon, and a large dining space with a bar. For nearby residents, Boynton Tropical is another sign of western Boynton’s continued growth. It also adds a rental alternative for older adults who want modern amenities without owning a home, near shopping, healthcare and Green Cay. Leasing is already underway, and the community is promoting private hard-hat tours as construction advances toward its expected winter opening.

One of the Area’s Favorite Nature Spots Is Temporarily Closing

A popular nature destination near western Boynton Beach will temporarily close for one week. Wakodahatchee Wetlands, located at 13270 Jog Road, will close from Monday, August 10th, through Sunday, August 16th, for scheduled maintenance. Palm Beach County says the wetlands are expected to reopen on Monday, August 17th. The free attraction is known for its three-quarter-mile boardwalk winding through 50 acres of constructed wetlands.

More than 178 bird species have been spotted there, along with alligators, turtles, rabbits, fish and other wildlife. It remains a favorite destination for walkers, bird-watchers and photographers throughout the Boynton and Delray area. Residents looking for an alternative during the closure can visit nearby Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands at 12800 Hagen Ranch Road. Wakodahatchee’s final day before the shutdown will be Sunday, August 9th. Once reopened, its regular operating hours are expected to remain 6:00 am to 7:00 pm daily.

A Long-Awaited New Post Office Is Coming to Downtown Boynton

A long-awaited new post office is planned for downtown Boynton Beach at 401–411 E. Boynton Beach Boulevard. The 3,474-square-foot USPS retail center would include a loading dock and parking. It would replace the current Downtown Station at 217 N. Seacrest Boulevard. The CRA selected Maple Tree Investments, a developer experienced in postal facilities, to purchase the CRA-owned land and build the new location. Once USPS moves, the existing Seacrest property could become available for a larger redevelopment project at one of downtown’s most visible intersections. Construction has not yet been publicly announced, but the relocation would preserve postal services downtown while opening another valuable site for Boynton’s continuing transformation.

🤔 Did You Know?

In 1911, Boynton’s first stand-alone post office opened on Ocean Avenue under longtime postmaster Charlie Pierce. The small wooden building was reportedly constructed with lumber salvaged from the 1909 Coquimbo shipwreck. More than a place to collect mail, it became a community gathering spot where residents shared news and borrowed books from Boynton’s first lending library.

A major warehouse proposal in the Agricultural Reserve, just south of Boynton’s western communities, is drawing attention from residents across South Palm Beach County. The Park West Commerce North plan would convert 50.99 acres at Atlantic Avenue and Starkey Road. The land is near the Turnpike and currently used for agriculture and a wholesale nursery. If approved, it would turn the land into a 730,026-square-foot complex of warehouses, self-storage, fitness and manufacturing uses. That scale has sparked a growing backlash from nearby farmers, equestrian groups and residents.

Opponents fear a steady stream of tractor-trailers, added noise and more congestion in an area better known for open land, working farms and horses than industrial buildings. A petition is now calling on county commissioners to reject the plan. Additionally, a bigger plot of agricultural land directly to the west is for sale (as seen above). This land could potentially be developed as well. Why should residents of Boynton care? The Agricultural Reserve helps protect the open-space buffer west of the city. Supporters of the development say more logistics space is needed. Critics, on the other hand, believe this is exactly the kind of industrial growth the reserve was created to prevent. There is a county hearing scheduled for September 24. The Boynton Weekly will stay on top of the story as it progresses.

A New Healthcare Hub Is Quietly Rising In West Boynton

After years of waiting, a new medical center in West Boynton is finally nearing completion. Amicus Medical Center is rising on a 1.5-acre site at 10234 Hagen Ranch Road, across from the larger Baptist Health City campus. Approved by Palm Beach County in 2019, the approximately 15,500-square-foot, two-story building is designed for dental offices, physicians, specialty healthcare providers, wellness clinics and other medical professionals. Leasing is now active, and the center is beginning to attract healthcare tenants, although an exact opening date has not been announced.

The project may not be enormous, but its location makes it important. West Boynton continues adding residents through developments such as Boynton Tropical and other growing communities. Having more doctors, dentists and wellness services nearby could mean shorter drives and more convenient care for thousands of residents. A Once-Ordinary Wall Is Now Celebrating Boynton Beach

Visitors to this year’s Boynton Beach Night Market got more than food, music and shopping. They watched a colorful new mural come to life. Artists from Dream in Color created the artwork at Centennial Park throughout the two-day event, giving attendees a front-row seat to the creative process. The mural is eye-catching and captures the city’s coastal personality. Visitors could also interact with the artists and watch the design develop as the market continued. More than just decoration, the live painting brought local art into the celebration. It’s exciting to see another memorable splash of color fill Downtown Boynton.

After years of delays and empty promises, Ocean One is finally rising above Federal Highway—and it could become one of the most important pieces of Boynton Beach’s downtown transformation. The eight-story development, stretching from 114 to 222 N. Federal Highway, is expected to include 371 rental apartments and roughly 25,000 square feet of restaurants, shops and other commercial space. Plans also feature a large parking garage with 90 public spaces, plus a pool, fitness center, pickleball court, coworking areas and a sports simulator.

For residents, Ocean One could mean far more than another apartment building. Hundreds of new neighbors will bring daily foot traffic, customers for nearby businesses and fresh energy to an area the city has worked for years to revitalize. Its location near Ocean Avenue and the marina could also help connect downtown’s restaurants, waterfront and shopping areas. After being discussed since 2018, Boynton residents can finally watch the project take shape.

Big Changes Are Coming To South Federal Highway

Construction is moving forward on The Dune, a major new development reshaping South Federal Highway just south of downtown Boynton Beach. The project will include 298 apartments in an eight-story building, 38 three-story townhomes and nearly 2,600 square feet of commercial space. What makes The Dune especially important is that 198 of its 336 homes - nearly 60% - will be reserved as workforce housing for middle-income residents. That could help teachers, nurses, service workers and other local professionals remain close to their jobs as coastal housing costs continue climbing.

Plans also include structured parking, upscale amenities and views of the Intracoastal and ocean. For East Boynton residents, The Dune represents both opportunity and change. It will replace older, lower-density properties with hundreds of new neighbors, while potentially bringing more customers and energy to nearby businesses. Together with Ocean One and other projects, it is another sign that Boynton’s eastern corridor is entering a dramatic new chapter.

A Boynton Beach Dining Landmark Has Closed for Good

After more than 20 years serving Boynton Beach, Golden Corral has closed its longtime restaurant at 389 Winchester Park Boulevard, near Walmart. The all-you-can-eat buffet served its final customers after dinner on Sunday, July 26, ending an era for many local families and seniors. The roughly 10,000-square-foot restaurant sits on 2.67 acres, and the property had already been listed for sale in late 2025 for $4.85 million. That suggests change may have been coming well before the closure announcement. No official reason has been given, and there is no word yet on what business or redevelopment could eventually replace the familiar restaurant.

In the early 1900s, Oscar Winchester operated a Boynton pineapple plantation called Flatwoods, earning him the local nickname “Pineapple King.” Pineapples once flourished in South Florida’s sandy soil and became an important part of Boynton’s early economy. Today, neighborhoods and commercial development have replaced most of those farms, leaving behind only faint traces of Boynton’s agricultural roots.

After years of planning, construction is finally underway on The Ellie at Logan Ranch, a major new rental community near Boynton Beach Blvd and Acme Dairy Road, just west of Florida’s Turnpike. The 39-acre project will include 314 residences spread across six four-story apartment buildings and seven two-story townhouse buildings, with layouts ranging from one to four bedrooms. Plans also include recreation areas, lakes and preserved open space.

At least 45 homes are designated as workforce housing for people who earn too much for traditional assistance but may still struggle with rising local rents. The Ellie matters because it sits directly across from The District, the enormous new sports, recreation and business complex now taking shape. Together, the projects could transform this once-rural corner of west Boynton into a busy new destination. They will bring housing, entertainment and jobs - but also more construction, development and traffic along an already crowded Boynton Beach Blvd corridor.

A $15 Million Transformation Is Underway Along Lyons Road

The long-shuttered Sherbrooke Golf & Country Club along Lyons Road is finally being transformed—but not into the housing development once proposed. The 153-acre property was purchased for $15 million and is now being rebuilt as Nokosi, an exclusive private golf and wellness club connected to legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus and his family. The name Nokosi means “bear,” a fitting tribute to Nicklaus, who is famously known as the Golden Bear.

Plans include a completely redesigned 18-hole golf course, dining, fitness and wellness facilities, event space and advanced golf-training areas. The course is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the clubhouse and additional amenities to follow. The project matters to Boynton-area residents because it preserves one of the largest remaining open spaces along the rapidly developing Lyons Road corridor. It could also create jobs and strengthen nearby property values, although the club itself will be reserved for members rather than the general public.

Boynton Drivers May Soon Notice A Big Change On Dixie Highway

The long-empty Kmart on South Dixie Highway in Lantana may finally be coming down. Plans call for the 18-acre property to become Lantana Village, a major redevelopment with 426 homes and nearly 22,000 square feet of shops and restaurants. The first phase would include 307 apartments, commercial space, wide sidewalks, outdoor seating and a public gathering area. For Boynton Beach residents, the project matters because it could bring new dining and shopping options just minutes away while also adding traffic to an already busy corridor. Demolition has been discussed for this summer, but permits have not yet been issued.

Knuth Road carries the name of one of Boynton Beach’s pioneering families. Charles and Alice Knuth arrived in 1915 and became part of the area’s booming dairy industry, with their family operating Few Acres Dairy. Charles later served as Boynton’s mayor from 1923 to 1925. Today, the road preserves a small piece of the city’s agricultural history. And here’s the part many locals get wrong: the K is pronounced. It’s traditionally said “Ka-NUTH,” not “Nuth.”

A piece of Boynton’s natural landscape now has stronger protection. City commissioners voted unanimously to permanently protect roughly 15 acres of city-owned Nickels Forest near Nickels Road, preventing the land from being developed, used for dumping or altered without another unanimous vote. That matters because undeveloped land is becoming increasingly rare in Boynton Beach. Nickels Forest provides trees, wildlife habitat, shade and a quiet natural buffer near one of the city’s busiest commercial areas.

Protecting it also preserves a small reminder of what Boynton looked like before much of the surrounding land was paved and built upon. Residents should know the protection applies to the city-owned portion of the forest. A nearby privately owned property remains separate and has been discussed for possible townhomes. Even so, the city’s action gives the protected acreage a much stronger safeguard than it had before and ensures that this green space will not quietly disappear during future development debates.

After Years of Delays, The Pierce May Finally Be Moving

After years of waiting, Boynton Beach is taking another step to move The Pierce forward. The city has agreed to accelerate a previously approved $7 million incentive for the downtown project near Federal Highway and Ocean Avenue. The Pierce is expected to include about 300 apartments, roughly 17,000 square feet of restaurant, retail and office space, and 150 public parking spaces. Half of the apartments are planned as workforce housing for at least 15 years, giving teachers, first responders, service workers and local employees more opportunities to live near where they work.

The project matters because the site sits in the heart of downtown and has remained empty while residents waited for progress. If construction begins, The Pierce could bring customers to nearby businesses, add housing choices and create more activity around Ocean Avenue. The funding change does not guarantee immediate construction, but it is a meaningful sign that the city wants this long-delayed centerpiece moving.

Another Piece of Western Boynton Is Changing

A small piece of land once used for the Westchester Country Club entrance sign is now slated for housing. Palm Beach County commissioners voted 5-2 on July 14th to approve rezoning for seven two-story single-family homes on the 2.4-acre property at Military Trail and Pipers Glen Boulevard. The site was sold for $900,000 in 2024 and had long been maintained as open space. Nearby Tuscany Bay residents raised concerns about privacy and building height, prompting the developer to agree to lower the homes from 35 feet to 30 feet. This is separate from the previously reported plan for 49 townhomes elsewhere at Westchester. For western Boynton residents, the decision means another formerly open parcel will become housing, though the underlying zoning could have allowed as many as 12 homes.

The final undeveloped corner of Hypoluxo and Lyons roads is moving closer to becoming Windsor Place, a 40-acre mixed-use project with 194 apartments, 206 townhomes and more than 15,000 square feet of retail and professional space. New leasing information names Chase Bank and Tide Cleaners among the planned tenants, with portions of the retail center expected to become available this fall. Palm Beach County records estimate the completed project will generate approximately 3,264 additional vehicle trips each day, including 275 during the evening rush hour.

That added traffic will arrive at an intersection already used by 15,000 to 27,000 vehicles daily. County approvals require the developer to add turn lanes at project entrances along Lyons and Hypoluxo roads before the related buildings can open. Windsor Place will bring new homes, shops and nearby services, but for Boynton-area drivers, the larger question remains: Can the roads keep pace with the growth?

Mystery Construction Behind Sprouts Finally Explained

Residents wondering what is rising behind Sprouts at Boynton Beach Boulevard and Jog Road are looking at Boynton Beach Place, a new commercial development at 6345 West Boynton Beach Boulevard. The nearly nine-acre project will bring several new businesses to the front of the property, including El Car Wash, Firestone, an Avis rental location and a planned coffee shop. Behind them, two three-story climate-controlled self-storage buildings are approved, along with outdoor storage for vehicles and RVs.

Why does it matter? This area has become one of west Boynton’s busiest shopping zones, surrounded by Sprouts, Publix, Wawa, LA Fitness and other popular destinations. Boynton Beach Place will fill one of the remaining large parcels, add convenient services close to home and reduce the need for some residents to drive farther east or west. It also shows how quickly western Boynton is changing, with new development continuing to reshape the community every year.

Most residents don’t realize the mansion at 6301 North Ocean Boulevard is tied to one of Boynton Beach’s most enduring urban legends. Over the years, rumors claimed it was owned by celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey or Michael Jackson - but neither story is true. The property is actually the historic site of the Boynton Hotel, built in 1897 by Major Nathan Boynton. The hotel helped establish the area as a popular winter resort destination and played an important role in the city’s early growth. More than a century later, the celebrity rumors still linger, making the property one of Boynton Beach’s most intriguing pieces of local history.

Palm Beach County has pulled the plug - at least for now - on Project Tango, a massive AI data center proposed near Loxahatchee. After a 12-hour hearing Wednesday, commissioners voted 5-1 to deny the expansion, citing questions about noise, water use, power demand and whether the industrial-scale complex belonged near homes and Saddle View Elementary School. The plan called for 3.6 million square feet of development, including about 1 million square feet for data-center space.

The denial was “without prejudice,” meaning the developer could return with a revised proposal. It also does not erase an older 2016 approval allowing a smaller data center and warehouses on the property. For Boynton residents, the bigger issue is precedent. The county is pausing new large data-center applications while it develops stronger rules. Those standards could determine where future AI facilities are built, how close they may sit to neighborhoods and schools, and what protections are required for noise, water and energy use.

Boynton’s Fire Rescue Fee May Jump - Here’s What It Could Cost You

Boynton Beach homeowners could pay $25 more next year for fire rescue services after commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday, July 14th, to raise the preliminary maximum residential assessment from $145 to $170 per dwelling. Rates would also increase for commercial, industrial, institutional and nursing-home properties. City officials say the additional revenue would support Fire Rescue staffing and department needs, while commissioners linked the increase to a possible rollback in the city’s property-tax rate.

That matters because fire-assessment money is restricted to fire services, while property-tax revenue can be used more broadly. The $170 figure is not the final bill. It is the maximum rate that can appear on mailed TRIM notices, and commissioners could still lower it before the final public hearing on September 8th. For a typical homeowner, the proposed increase equals about $2.08 per month. Residents should watch both decisions together: the fire fee may rise, but a lower tax rate could offset some - or possibly all - of the increase.

Boynton Traffic Alert: Expect Delays In These Busy Areas

Boynton drivers may want to leave a little extra time this weekend. Utility work is creating periodic lane closures on South Seacrest Boulevard between SW 26th Avenue and SE 23rd Avenue. Old Boynton Road, from just north of Boynton Beach Boulevard to North Congress Avenue, may also have intermittent closures with flaggers directing traffic. At Congress Avenue and Old Boynton Road, right lanes in both directions could close periodically. Expect brief backups, slower turns and shifting traffic patterns near the work zones. Boynton Beach residents have spoken clearly about what they want built on a major city-owned site near Boynton Beach Boulevard and Interstate 95. The Community Redevelopment Agency spent nearly $16 million assembling 5.65 acres at the western gateway to downtown and received more than 1,000 survey responses about its future. Residents strongly favored walkable sidewalks, local restaurants and cafés, landscaping, shade, green space, family-friendly dining, arts, and small businesses. Most also preferred buildings no taller than five stories.

Their biggest concerns were traffic, congestion, and parking. This matters because the property sits at one of the most visible entrances to downtown Boynton Beach. Whatever is built there could shape the city’s image, affect nearby neighborhoods, create jobs, and influence traffic for years. In the 1940’s-70’s roadside stands were all over Boynton. One such place was the Florieda Gift Shop on South Federal Highway. Its unusual name was intentional and extremely memorable. With a Gulf filling station, a tropical market, and a gift shop, it was a popular spot to visit. Travelers pulled in for freshly squeezed citrus juice, alligator handbags, tropical gifts, and more. Boynton Beach is quietly writing the rulebook for its next generation of growth. The city is updating its Comprehensive Plan 2050, a long-range blueprint that will help decide where housing goes, how roads and utilities are planned, what land is protected, where parks are improved, and how future development is managed. In other words, this is not just another City Hall document collecting dust. It is the plan that can shape traffic, density, redevelopment, neighborhoods, housing costs, public spaces, and the overall feel of Boynton Beach for decades.

The plan includes major sections on future land use, transportation, housing, utilities, conservation, recreation, coastal management, capital improvements, and private property rights. The next key step is scheduled for July 7th at 5:30 pm, when the plan heads to the Local Planning Agency for a first reading/transmittal hearing. North Seacrest May Be Next In Boynton’s Redevelopment Push

A quiet stretch of North Seacrest Boulevard may become one of the next pieces of Boynton Beach’s downtown redevelopment puzzle. The Boynton Beach CRA is assembling three properties — 209 and 217 N. Seacrest Boulevard, along with 109 NW 1st Avenue — for a future commercial or mixed-use project. The agency has spent more than $3.5 million acquiring the land, including the former two-story office building at 209 N. Seacrest, which has since been demolished after officials determined it was too costly to bring up to current safety standards.

No final project or completion date has been announced yet, which means this is still in the early land-assembly stage. But the impact could be significant. A future development could bring new businesses, housing, jobs, and activity to an area just west of the downtown core. For residents, it is another sign that Boynton’s redevelopment is not just happening along Federal Highway - it is beginning to push deeper into surrounding blocks.

For a city blessed with access to the Intracoastal Waterway, Boynton Beach has long lacked the kind of waterfront district that has become a centerpiece like neighboring communities have.

Visitors to Delray Beach often flock to Atlantic Avenue, while West Palm Beach boasts Clematis Street and a bustling waterfront lined with parks, restaurants, and public gathering spaces. Even Lake Worth Beach has developed a recognizable downtown connected to its waterfront identity.

So why hasn’t Boynton Beach?

Part of the answer lies in history. Unlike some neighboring cities, Boynton Beach developed around agriculture, industry, and transportation corridors rather than around a central waterfront district. Much of the cities growth occurred inland, leaving the waterfront area fragmented among marinas, commercial properties, and transportation infrastructure.

That may be changing. Over the past several years, city leaders and the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) have invested heavily in the downtown and waterfront areas. Several projects are currently in the works, which are bringing hundreds of new residents closer to the city’s eastern core. At the same time, improvements at Boynton Harbor Marina and surrounding public spaces continue to strengthen the connection between downtown and the water.

The challenge remains creating a walkable destination where residents and visitors can dine, shop, gather, and enjoy the waterfront in one place. Building that kind of district takes time, private investment, public infrastructure, and a critical mass of people living nearby.

For perhaps the first time in decades, Boynton Beach may be approaching that tipping point. With thousands of new residential units planned or currently under construction in eastern Boynton, the city is laying the foundation for a waterfront district that could eventually become one of South Florida’s hidden gems.

The question is no longer whether Boynton Beach has the ingredients. The question is whether those ingredients can finally come together to create the vibrant waterfront destination residents and city officials have envisioned for years.

Budget decisions can also influence redevelopment efforts in eastern Boynton Beach, neighborhood improvements, traffic flow, and long-term infrastructure planning. Residents frequently ask for smoother roads, safer sidewalks, better parks, improved pedestrian connections, and upgraded public spaces. Budget season is when many of those requests compete for limited funding.

The city must also balance rising operating costs with long-term capital needs. Everything from maintaining parks and roads to replacing aging equipment and supporting police and fire services is part of the annual budget process. With possible changes to Florida’s property tax laws expected to be considered by voters in November, these decisions may be even more important than usual.

Once a quiet rural connector near the Agricultural Reserve, Lyons Road has become one of the region’s busiest north-south corridors. Still, many residents question whether road upgrades are keeping pace with development. The larger issue is clear: how can western Boynton Beach grow without sacrificing quality of life?

Boynton Beach Expands Police Tech — But Privacy Questions Remain

Boynton Beach leaders have approved a $2.2 million investment in new public safety technology, including additional police drones and automatic license plate readers. KC Market, the kosher grocery store in Village Square on Woolbright Road in Boynton Beach, is facing a legal dispute that could affect its future at the shopping center. According to court filings and published reports, the property owner has filed an eviction action claiming the market owes more than $100,000 in unpaid rent, maintenance fees, and other charges. KC Market has reportedly disputed some of the charges and is working to resolve the matter.

The store opened in late 2023 in the former Publix space and quickly became a destination for Boynton Beach’s growing kosher community, offering groceries, prepared foods, bakery items, and specialty products for local families. For now, KC Market remains open and continues serving customers while the case moves through the legal process. Like many commercial landlord-tenant disputes, the matter could still be settled before any final court decision is made.

Could One Of Boynton’s Last Forests Be Saved?

A disputed piece of city-owned forested land in east Boynton Beach is headed back to City Hall after residents urged commissioners to take another look at its future. At the June 16th city commission meeting, commissioners agreed to place Boynton Forest on a future agenda for more public discussion. The decision does not preserve the property or approve development, but it opens the door for more review before any final action is taken.

Vice Mayor Thomas Turkin requested the discussion after residents continued raising concerns about a proposed 72-unit townhome project that would remove the wooded area. Unresolved questions include possible deed restrictions, Palm Beach County’s authority over the land, and what legal tools could permanently protect the site. Residents have pointed to wildlife habitat, tree canopy, groundwater recharge, cooler neighborhood temperatures, and gopher tortoises on the property. No final decision has been made, but preservation advocates say the forest deserves long-term protection.

Tucked away along Seacrest Boulevard is Boynton Beach Memorial Park, but it is more than just a cemetery. It is a tangible link to the community’s earliest days. Known as the “Old Section”, it served as the first official burial ground for the pioneers who settled in Boynton at the turn of the 20th century. The earliest legible gravestones date back to 1903, just a few years after the town of Boynton was platted in 1898 and when fewer than 100 people called the area home. Many of Boyntons founding families are represented here.
